Mocha madness

Is there, say, a German word that means “wanting something you know will be disappointing”?

I’ve been drinking the same instant cocoa for years, Swiss Miss Chocolate Sensation. Recently they changed the name to “Swiss Miss Indulgent Collection: Dark Chocolate Sensation,” and put a photo of a hot girl drinking cocoa on the back.

Also on the back, I eventually noticed, is a teaser for the other Indulgent Collection flavors. One is French Vanilla, which doesn’t interest me. The other is Mocha Cappuccino. Doesn’t that sound great? I know exactly what it will taste like: instant coffee with anemic chocolate flavor. I’m totally buying it the first time I see it.

I love(d) Swiss Miss Chocolate Sensation! But it’s almost impossible to find in NYC. None of the grocery stores carry it, and I’ve only been able to find it in one Upper East Side bodega. (And, believe me, I’ve looked.)Thanks for alerting me to the name change; maybe the stores will be swayed by the new name and will start to carry it now.
In related instant hot cocoa news, I’ve recently discovered that stirring a packet of hot cocoa into a cup of plain yogurt is surprisingly delicious.
Looking forward to your Mocha Cappuccino report. I’m betting your anemia prediction will be spot-on.

I’d be able to put that word to good use too, because I have a strange form of partial amnesia. Every once in awhile I think that maybe this time those powdered donuts or chocolate-covered cupcake things in the snack machine at work will be tasty.

Sadly, this is never the case.

Taking it too literally, but I think Enttäuschungslust would do the trick… Roughly, wanting to be disappointed. That is a Googlewhack, at least until today… Täuschungslust, roughly, wanting to be deceived, might be a good alternative.

Jason, that is too cool. And Laurel, I always hit up the free cappuccino machine when I’m at the returns counter at IKEA. Is it still there?

Susann, I had cocoa yogurt for my midnight snack last night and it was awesome! Slightly grainy, but in a good way.

My midnight snack is at 9:30pm.

Cocoa + yogurt = desperation chocolate fix, but as noted, grainy in a good way. Been eating that for years.

mamster – free coffee drinks at Elliott Auto Service Center on 4th S, next time you need your tires rotated or oil changed (do you even have a car?) and Subaru quick service place up North on Aurora as well. The sales room coffee station used to have hoho’s too! And sometimes grilled hot dogs.

ts, I have no car, but I should get one if it means free vending machine coffee.

As I suspected. Maybe you could just pretend to be shopping for a car or tires. Especially on bbq days.
What is it about free that is so tantilizing?

ts, there’s a whole chapter in the great new book Predictably Irrational about why free is so tantalizing. Highly recommended.

I like Jason’s suggestions … but my version (because it’s longer and therefore more Teutonic) would be:
    die Enttäuschungsehnsucht, or
“the disappointment of impossible romantic yearning.”
